The Devil's Tower

Downe Township, Nature's Lovers Paradise, home of two nesting Bald Eagle families and home of the Weak Fish Capital of the World, may soon be home to five cellular antenna towers.

Five. Count 'em. See for yourself.

One: Existing tower on Pepper property in Dividing Creek

Two: Approved monopole tower at Fortescue

Three: Approved lattice tower on Sharp Lane, Newport

Four: Planned tower on Ackley Road, Newport

Five: Planned tower at Dividing Creek Fire Company

Downe Township is 54 square miles of land populated by roughly 1624 men, women and children. We have plenty of deer, turkey, ducks, crabs and fish and now we may have...

FIVE CELLULAR TELEPHONE towers?!?!

The most famous of the Downe Towers is planned for Sharp Lane in Newport. The Sharp Lane tower is known by its real name:

The Devil's Tower!

From the edge of the property on which the eyesore will be built to the edge of the famous Bear Swamp West is less than 1000 feet. The intended erection site is within 50 feet of the Glades Wildlife Refuge. Matter of fact, if the150 foot tall lattice cellular communications tower with space for up to five antenna falls to the west or to the south it will land within the Glades Wildlife Refuge.

I have filed litigation against the planning board, the township and the tower company for various reasons. All the details of the litigation can be read on litigation page which is here.

Devil's Tower Environmental Issues

Downe Township is unique for many reasons not the least of which is our wonderful natural surroundings. Those of us who live here realize that we have one of New Jersey's best kept secrets right in our own backyard.

We have some of the state's best fishing, crabbing, hunting and bird watching.

Downe Township is extremely unique in that a very large amount of land--63% of Downe's total land area--within the township is exempt from taxation for environmental reasons and owned by the State of New Jersey, The Nature Conservancy or the Natural Lands Trust..

Natural Lands Trust letter to planning board.

Peter Williamson of the Natural Lands Trust, Downe Township's second largest owner of tax exempt land, wrote a letter to the Planning board. See letter content here
